Welcome to the Affenberg Salem

Around 200 Barbary macaques live in the 20-hectare forest area, which you can observe on a walk through the grounds. Whether they are sitting on a railing and staring curiously at the visitor, shimmying through the trees or frolicking wildly in piggyback - watching the primates from Morocco and Algeria is both entertaining and educational.

Watching baby monkeys in spring

Between March and October, you can stroll through the large, hilly forest area in the fresh Lake Constance air and watch the frolicking Barbary macaques. There are no dividing fences or ditches here. Incidentally, the most impressive time on the Affenberg is in May, when the monkeys' babies are born. It is a unique experience to see how the monkey moms and dads hug their lively newborns tightly to their bodies while they suck on their little fingers and observe the edge of the path. In winter, the monkeys have the area all to themselves - this is mating season and the park is closed.

Where do the animals come from?

Because the Barbary macaques are highly endangered, the inhabitants of the Salem Monkey Mountain, originally native to the mountainous regions of Morocco and Algeria, are considered a valuable reserve population. However, keeping them at the Affenberg allows the animals to lead a natural life far away from danger. And you have the chance to observe the animals. There is a lot to see and learn: during the feeding sessions, the staff explain lots of interesting facts about their little charges.

If things get a little too silly...

...there are many other animals that live on Salem Monkey Mountain. Among other things, a free-flying white stork colony breeds here. You can also observe these animals up close during feedings on the stork meadow. A live video broadcast during the breeding season also provides an insight into the nursery. The peaceful pond is also home to swans, greylag geese, mallards, coots, great crested grebes and many other animals that keep returning to the crystal-clear still water. The fallow deer enclosure on the Affenberg is also home to a herd of hinds with their young and a fallow deer.

Adventure and relaxation on the Salem Monkey Mountain

Visitors of all ages are well entertained at Affenberg Salem. For the little ones, there is also a varied adventure playground with a climbing tower, slide, sandpit, swings and balancing course. If the children want to run around a bit, they are in good hands here. Relax under the chestnut trees in the pub's garden with delicious food and drinks, coffee and cake and a cool ice cream for dessert in summer.
