Welcome to Hirschfeld Zoo
Records kept by Martha von Arnim (née von Schlegel) show that the area and its trees had been protected for centuries. Old maps from 1870 show that there was an animal enclosure near Voigtsgrün. It belonged to Alexander von Arnim, who kept red deer here. The hunting lodge, today's log cabin, was built around 1890. In 1909, his brother, Arno von Arnim, inherited Voigtsgrün and thus also the animal enclosure.
The foundation stone for today's zoo was laid in 1956. The site, which was initially around 6 hectares in size, has trees that are up to 450 years old. Today, the zoo administration is located in the log cabin.
A number of highlights await our visitors:
"Eulerei"
In the "Eulerei", which is open to visitors, you can get up close and personal with native owls. The 200 m² facility offers bearded owls, tawny owls, barn owls and long-eared owls plenty of space to fly.
"Bear country"
Our 9000 m² outdoor enclosure for brown bears and wolves was newly opened in 2006 and offers our largest predators species-appropriate living conditions. The visitor terrace offers a view of the entire enclosure without any disturbing fences.
"Monkey house"
Four species of monkey are housed here, including the black macaques, which are extremely rare in zoos. The offspring of the rhesus monkeys always provide action, even for visitors.
"Pheasantry"
The "pheasantry" is home to many native birds such as little owls and jackdaws, as well as exotic birds from macaws to siskins. Chickens and pheasants can be observed all year round in the beautifully planted grounds.
"Polaris"
An enclosure inhabited by the arctic fox and snowy owl provides information about the displacement of species from their polar habitat.
Rüsselsheim" is also being created as a new enclosure for our coatis.
For our younger guests, there are two children's playgrounds in the park, a mouse house and a rat cellar that you should take a look inside. Children's birthday parties can also be booked with us.
