Welcome to Herborn Zoo

The former "Vogelpark Herborn" is now called "Tierpark", and rightly so, because there is more to see than just birds. The park's slogan "NaturNah erleben" ("Experience nature close up") certainly does the park justice, because there really is a lot on offer here. Nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland Nature Park, it presents its visitors with a unique variety of species in the region all year round. From numerous parrots to meerkats, kangaroos, liszt monkeys and python snakes, owls, storks, flamingos and fire salamanders, representatives of all continents and all vertebrate classes can be found in near-natural and partly accessible enclosures and aviaries. Hardly any other place is better suited to introducing children and young people to natural history topics due to the variety of animals on display here. The zoo offers various zoo-educational themed tours suitable for all age groups. This extensive information work is intended to help sensitize people to the need to protect the environment. The zoo's motto is: Nature and species conservation begins in everyday life.

Founded in 1966 by committed bird conservationists, the former bird park has developed into a species-rich zoo with a wide range of activities. Today, the organizers see nature and species conservation as a central task of the park. Since the very beginning, they have been drawing visitors' attention to the interrelationships within the "nature" network, working together with many nature conservation organizations and participating in numerous European conservation breeding programmes for endangered species.

On an area of more than one hectare, visitors will find over 90 different animal species from all continents. Naturally laid out and barrier-free paths and enclosures invite visitors to take a leisurely stroll or actively observe the animals. Numerous benches offer space to relax. From the southern slope of the park, visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the entire valley.

By the way: the park also has a heart for dogs. Bringing your four-legged friend on a lead is no problem. Bowls with fresh water are always available at various points.

A special highlight are the daily public feedings of the meerkats, lizzard monkeys and parrots, which the zookeepers present with great enthusiasm. There is also a café that serves hearty and sweet refreshments at weekends and during the Hessian school vacations. Goats can be fed and pampered in the adjacent petting enclosure. If you like, there are plenty of opportunities to play in the playground directly below the park.
