Animal park
Endangered livestock breeds such as Thuringian forest goats, Hinterwald cattle, German karakul and Meissen rams live in the Merzig Animal and Ark Park. In addition, South American coatis, alpacas, honeybees, and budgerigars and cockatiels live in the enclosures by the Blättelborn pond.
Initiated in 1962 by the then mayor Gerd Caspar in the area of the city park and moved to its current location next to the Blättelbornweiher pond a few years later, the Merzig Animal and Ark Park has developed into one of the most popular excursion and recreational destinations in the district town of Merzig over the past few years and decades.
In2016, it was decided to move away from keeping wild animals as far as possible and gradually switch to endangered livestock breeds. The aim is also to create a place where children can experience agriculture and livestock farming with all their senses, as the park is increasingly being used by school classes and kindergartens as a place of learning.
It was also important to those responsible to meet the requirements of modern animal husbandry conditions.
Since being awarded the certificate by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds in 2019, the zoo has been able to call itself an "Ark Park", giving it a unique selling point in the Saar-Lor-Lux region
