Animal park vs. zoo
What is actually the difference?
According to the EU Zoos Directive, "zoo" is the collective term for all permanent facilities that exhibit live wild animals for at least 7 days a year. Animal parks are often smaller facilities with an increased number of native animal species. Wildlife parks are exclusively home to regional fauna.
Quite old
How long have zoos been around and which one is the oldest?
Evidence of facilities in which wild animals were kept goes back over 5000 years. In August 1844, the Zoological Garden was opened in Berlin as the first of its kind in Germany.
Species-appropriate
What does species-appropriate husbandry in zoos mean?
The natural living conditions of the animals are imitated and innate behaviors are also taken into account. In addition to the urge to move, this also includes hunting instincts or the need of some species to hide.
